Reading Response 11/18/2013
I enjoyed reading about the different ways to manipulate an image, such as through painting, using pins and hole punchers, or even a rock mounted on a wall. By adding different elements to a photograph, the image has potential to become something more. Darren Harvey-Regan's 'Phrase (a fragment), Fragment (a phrase)' was an example that I responded to. He mounted a rock on the wall above a photograph of a rock, which he placed on the ground. The fact that the rock can be see in different angles and in different lights puts it on a pedestal that may not be seen if it were in its natural setting. I like the idea of taking an object and giving it a new life. I appreciate the juxtaposition and after reading this article I hope to think of ways I can use a similar approach in how I install my final project.
Final Project Proposal
For the final project, I will be commenting on body image through a series of photographs that I have taken in Italy last year. The subject is an Italian woman in the nude where I focused on creating different forms of the body. I want to focus on this series of photographs because I enjoy exploring the human perception of the body and how some individuals have a distorted view of themselves. With that being said, I will be focusing most on texture by scratching the surface of my photographs to display 'flaws'. The pattern of scratches will resemble how one carves to make a print, exposing the different value tones by carving less or more. I also want them to be displayed in a more sculpturally manner. This project will challenge me because it will push my ideas for my body of work much further and create an addition of depth to the photographs. I envision these prints being as large as I can make them and in terms of paper, I am thinking matte paper because the scratching will look more crisp on matte paper. I could use help with considering different ways to display my piece sculpturally.
